The Lightbox Woking Guide

The Lightbox Woking Guide - The celebrated Lightbox is a museum and gallery located in Woking, Surrey, in South-East England. Its 3 galleries hold a variety of exhibitions, plus a free local history museum - 'Woking's Story'. The gallery opened to the public on September 14th, 2007. Conveniently situated in the middle of Woking adjacent to the Basingstoke Canal, Woking's Lightbox was primarily built to provide heritage and arts offerings to the local area and surrounding communities.

This process first started in 1993 when a local group of seventy volunteers thought they would try to establish a centre for culture in the Woking, Surrey area. After a fundraising campaign the contemporary structure was designed by Marks Barfield Architects who also designed the London Eye. It won the Museum of the Year (awarded by the Art Fund) in 2008, the Big Society Award 2012, and in 2016 it was awarded a Green Tourism silver award.

The Lightbox which is partly financed by Woking Borough Council is a registered charity and limited company, it has also been given assistance from the Arts Council and the National Lottery (Heritage Fund). The Lightbox holds approximately 20 temporary exhibitions each year, most of which are formulated in-house. Now more than sixty thousand visitors every year enjoy free drop-in workshops, hands on activities, lectures, a schools development programme, exhibitions and events at The Lightbox.

Exciting exhibitions have shown the work of such celebrated artists as William Heath Robinson, Auguste Renoir, Gertrude Jekyll, Stanley Picker, Damien Hirst, Marcel Ronay, Joan Hurst, Andy Warhol, John Constable, Henry Moore and Sir Alfred Munnings.
