Woking History: First recorded in an Anglo Saxon document of the 8th century, Woking was originally known as Wochingas (or Wocchingas), which means “people of Wocca”, and was the site of a monastery situated beside the River Wey in Surrey. Later mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was listed as Wochinges, and held by, among others, William the Conqueror himself.

Site of a medieval palace (Woking Palace) since 1272, and much favoured by King Henry VII, the town witnessed the signing of the “Treaty of Woking” in 1490, between Henry VII and Maximillian of Austria. Woking Palace eventually fell into decline after being given to Sir Edward Zouch by King James I.

Woking continued life as a market town of no particular importance right up until the 19th century, when the arrival of the railway in 1838 brought more people to the area. The new Woking Common Station, was however, built some distance from the town centre, and the demand for accommodation and services, resulted in the town shifting somewhat to the areas around the station (and also the Bridgewater Canal), starting with the Railway Hotel.

Further growth occurred after the establishment of a new cemetery on Woking Common, to service the increasing demands of London, where few cemetery spaces existed.

The original settlement of Woking beside the River Wey, subsequently became known as Old Woking.

The name Woking was further brought to International notice when it was included in the H G Wells novel “The War of the Worlds” (1898), where it was the first landing place of the invading Martians.

Modern day Woking is a large commuter town of over 60,000 people, it has excellent facilities including the Peacocks shopping centre and a large leisure centre, with the “Pool in the Park” swimming complex.

The construction of this mosque was in part funded by Sultan Shah Jahan, the female head of the princely state of Bhopal in Central India. The Shah Jahan Mosque was constructed using Bath and Bargate stone in the Indo-Saracenic Revival style, the design was by a British architect called W L Chambers, who carefully researched books on Islamic architecture so as to construct an authentic looking structure. This listed (Grade II) building with its minarets, dome, courtyard, geometric patterns and calligraphy designs is the oldest mosque in Great Britain and was the United Kingdom's first proper place of worship for Islam, many people just call it "The Woking Mosque".
